Health Insurance for visa

記事

Valid health insurance is a mandatory requirement for both short-stay and long-stay visas. Please note that the visa can only be valid from the date on which you can prove that you have sufficient health insurance cover in Germany.

A: Schengen visa

Travel Health Insurance for Schengen-visa (short-term stay up to 90 days)

The insurance policy must be presented in English or German language at the time of application. We only accept health insurance issued by a company within the Schengen Agreement or in Japan. We do not accept health insurance policies issued in China or in Chinese language.
This policy/insurance certificate must clearly state the following information (please provide 1 (one) copy on the day of your application:

- period of validity: The insurance must be valid for the entire intended period of stay

- area of validity: The insurance must be valid for the entire Schengen area.

The mere mentioning “overseas” will not be accepted, the policy must clearly state that it is valid in all member countries of the Schengen agreement.

- name of the visa applicant / insured person

- insurance cover: The insurance cover must be at least EUR 30,000 for all risks. This means at least outpatient and inpatient medical expenses, as well as medical evacuation, medical repatriation and repatriation of remains in the event of death. Treatment costs for an illness with COVID-19 must not be explicitly excluded. The insured sum must be spelled out or it must be unlimited.
NO reimbursement, deductible or co-pay is accepted.

- insurance company: The policy must state the full address of the health insurance company in Japan or in one of the Schengen countries

Additional notes

- Confirmation of insurance by the employer or mere presentation of an insurance card will not be accepted.

- The duration of cover must be valid for your entire stay in the Schengen area, including the time difference (for example, an insurance valid until 24:00 in Japan may only be valid until 16:00 in Europe). However, it is advisable to arrange for a period of validity up to 15 days after your intended stay. This will allow flexibility in case of sudden impediments such as flight cancellation, delays, postponement of your trip, etc.

- Each insurance policy is checked individually. Please note that a policy may not be accepted, if the policy does not match the requirements. Some policies may contain special provisions such as age limitations or others that will render the policy unacceptable even if the above criteria are formally met.

- You may be required to provide proof of your health insurance also at the border when entering Germany or the Schengen area. That is why you must carry a copy of your insurance policy with you during your trip.

- If you are applying for an annual visa, you only need to provide proof of travel health insurance for the first planned stay.

Please check the details of your insurance policy and make sure that all the items listed above are specifically covered and stated by the policy. Please present only the (paid) policy with your visa application and mark the details with a permanent marker (name, cover, sum insured, period of validity).

B: National visa

Proof of health insurance for visa for a long-term stay (more than 90 days)

Applicants for any category D visa must have health insurance cover commensurate with the minimum level of the German statutory health insurance system (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung). The minimum benefits required are outlined in sec. 11 (1) to (3) SGB V (Social Insurance Code, Vol. 5).

Please note that travel health insurance and/or insurance that does not cover costs in the country of residence cannot be accepted for any D visa application.

The portal “Make it in Germany” provides comprehensive information on health insurance in Germany (Link einfügen: https://www.make-it-in-germany.com/en/living-in-germany/money-insurance/health-insurance)

Long-term/permanent stays for employment

Should you be taking up employment in Germany, you will be covered by statutory health insurance from the first day of employment. Please provide proof of your statutory health insurance cover in Germany and the date on which it will commence on the day of your visa application. If you enter the country before the start of your statutory health insurance cover, you will need to take out supplementary insurance that meets the criteria of the German statutory health insurance system.

Joining family/ relocating with a family member

Applicants joining family or relocating together with a family member that already is insured in the German statutory health insurance system will generally be insured through the family insurance based on the family member’s employment. As a family member, please provide proof that you will be insured through the family insurance, as well as the date on which the insurance cover will commence.

Other cases

In case you will not be insured in the German statutory system (e.g. working-holiday or language course participants) you will need to provide evidence that you have other health insurance cover commensurate with the minimum requirements. This evidence can be provided in form of a letter or insurance certificate, issued by the insurer, naming you as the beneficiary and outlining the scope of cover.

Please note that we will not be able to read the fine print of your insurance terms and conditions. Therefor do not submit all pages of your insurance contract. The letter or insurance certificate (!) must therefore clearly state that the insurance will cover your expenses during your secondment to Germany. It must also clearly state the level of insurance cover provided as well as any limitations and/or deductibles/excess.
