Airport Transit in Germany

Citizens of some countries do need an airport transit visa.
Please note that an airport transit visa only allows a short stay in the international transit area, neither leaving the airport's international transit area nor overnight stays are possible.

Airport Visa Needed?

Entry clearance requirements are dependent on the nationality and the resident status of the applicant. Due to its location at the heart of Europe, Germany is an important transit country. The vast majority of travellers do not need a visa when airtransitting through Germany. However, citizens of some countries do need an airport transit visa.
Please note that an airport transit visa only allows a short stay in the international transit area, neither leaving the airport's international transit area nor overnight stays are possible.

Please check with your Airline, if you have to pick up your baggage and/or have to check-in again. If so, you need to enter Germany. You will need a special transit visa.

Nationals of the following countries are required to be in possession of an airport transit visa when passing through the international transit area of airports in Germany:

  • Afghanistan
  • Bangladesh
  • Congo (Democratic Republic)
  • Cuba
  • Eritrea
  • Ethiopia
  • Ghana
  • India
  • Iran
  • Iraq
  • Jordan*
  • Lebanon
  • Mali
  • Myanmar
  • Nigeria
  • Pakistan
  • Somalia
  • South Sudan
  • Sri Lanka
  • Sudan
  • Syria
  • Turkey*

* further rules apply to these countries

The above named nationals do NOT need a transit visa if they are holder of a valid re-entry permit to Japan (sticker in passport). This does not apply to Jordanian and Turkish passport holders.

*Jordanian nationals do NOT require an Airport Transit Visa:

  • if they hold a visa for either Australia, Israel or New Zealand and the confirmed flight ticket or boarding card for the flight. This applies only to flights to above mentioned countries and return flights from these countries to Jordan.
  • on your return to Jordan from above mentioned countries: confirmed flight ticket or boarding pass is compulsory
  • transit time in Germany is not to exceed 12 hours

*Turkish holder of Service and Official passports do NOT require an Airport Transit Visa for Germany.

Please note that an airport transit visa only allows a short stay in the international transit area of some airports. We recommend to contact your airline as well, as they mave have other regulations. ​​​​​​​

For applicants at the Germany Embassy in Tokyo: Letterpack Plus (520 yen) for the return of the passport. For applications that are expected to be returned after 1 October: stamps for 80 yen in addition to the LetterPack. Currently, only the return of the passport by post is possible.


For applicants at the German Consulate General in Osaka-Kobe: If you wish to receive your passport in return by mail, you can return it by takkyubin cash on delivery. In this case, please enclose a self-addressed return DIN A4 envelope.

visa fees (90 EUR, payable in Japanese yen according to the official exchange rate on the date of application)

Please note: In individual cases, you may be required to provide additional documents.

Processing time

It is essential to allow yourself sufficient time when applying for a visa. The process may take up to 2 week.
